German Islands

Christian Bäck

The numerous German islands are a popular travel destination, and offer their visitors an amazing variety of beaches, nature preservation areas, untouched forests and places of interest. The landscape photographer Christian Bäck has long been interested in the island landscape of the North Sea and Baltic, and has created for this illustrated volume atmospheric panoramas of dunes, beaches, mudflats, the coast, the many lighthouses and seaside resorts. He focuses on the impressions of the landscape, the expanse of the sea and the unimpeded view of nature. His pictures often convey a feeling of peace and calm, and show unique lighting effects caused by changing weather conditions. Christian Bäck prefers the classic panorama format for his work – this creates a view of the subject in which the observer can immerse himself and discover details. Long exposure times enable the representation of movement, creating a contrast between rest and change. For the book “German Islands”, he has visited the North Sea and Baltic islands over several years, producing a portrait of the largest and also most popular holiday islands.
