The Engadine, the Swiss alpine valley in the south-eastern canton of Graubünden, is a fascinating region. It offers an unspoilt variety of flora and fauna, dense forests, a remarkable wealth of plant-life and a majestic alpine landscape surmounted by glaciers. The Upper Engadine, a valley floor lying at heights of up to nearly 6,000 ft., is famous for its lakeland landscape between Maloja and St. Moritz, and a popular destination for tourists and winter sports fans. The most famous event held here is the White Turf horse race in St. Moritz, which takes place every year on the frozen Lake St. Moritz. There are however many other highlights worth seeing, such as historic monasteries and villages with the typical Engadine houses, a type of farmhouse with massive stone walls; and not least the Rhätische Bahn (Rhaetian Railway), parts of which have been listed as UNESCO world cultural heritage sites. The nature of the Lower Engadine also has its own special character, with rugged valleys carved out by the River Inn, great natural variety and picturesque villages. Markus Aebischer knows the variety of the natural and cultural landscape of Switzerland like no other, and has compiled for this illustrated volume images rich in contrast, which reveal the unique character of this famous alpine valley.
