Namibia in South-West Africa, an independent republic since 1990, arouses many impressions of untamed nature. This country on the Atlantic coast is characterised essentially by two deserts: On the one hand by the Namib, which has not only given its name to the country, but is also one of the oldest and most arid deserts on Earth, and whose dunes are amongst the highest in the world. And on the other by the Kalahari Desert, mainly an area of thorn bush and dry savannah, which to the east throws out its western reaches into Namibia. The Namib Naukluft Park, the fourth-largest nature reserve in the world, the Cape Cross nature reserve on the South Atlantic, the Epupa Falls in the far north on the border with Angola and the Etosha National Park, one of the best-known wildlife reserves in the world, are amongst the most attractive sites the country has to offer. Hans Gasser has made several journeys through Namibia, and in addition to the unique nature of the country also portrays its major towns and cities, which today still bear clear signs of their colonial past.
