The south-east Asian kingdom of Cambodia on the Indochina peninsula and the Gulf of Thailand offers an overpowering spectacle of nature, and still bears testament to the thousand-year-old, advanced culture of the Khmer, whose great temple cities are not only amongst the largest in the world, but have also been listed by UNESCO as world cultural heritage sites. Large tracts of the country are still covered by primeval forest which are amongst the most unspoilt in south-east Asia, and are home to a rich variety of vegetation with many rare plants. The landscape of the central plane of Cambodia is dominated by the mighty Tonle Sap Lake, the largest lake of south-east Asia, and due to its huge abundance of fish the central source of nutrition and life. A further major influence on the landscape is exerted by the Mekong in the east of the country: one of the ten longest rivers in the world, the Mekong rises in the snows of Tibet and winds its way down to the China Sea. In 1925, Cambodia became the first country in south-east Asia to establish a nature reserve, and more and more were added during the course of the 20th century. The first of its kind was the area around the famous temple complex of Angkor, which today is a national park. This world cultural heritage site is a spectacular testament to the sophisticated building skills and the culture of the Khmer, whose monumental architecture still forms a highpoint for visitors to the country today, and is of invaluable importance for the cultural heritage of Cambodia. One exception to the rather flat geography of the country is the Kardamom Range, which with its picturesque mountain landscapes creates an attractive contrast with the surrounding plane. Anita Drobeck and Nico Rademacher however also have an eye for details: Insights into the rural life, the atmosphere in the towns and cities with their bustling markets, the monks asking for alms, and the landscape of the Mekong on the border with Laos, where the height difference between the countries becomes apparent. The beauty of Cambodia is portrayed admirably by the vivid panoramic photographs.
