The second-largest Mediterranean island of Sardinia, lying to the south of Corsica between Italy and France, offers its visitors regions full of character and many historical sights. The innumerable picturesque bays along the coast and the rugged mountain ranges are of a rare beauty. The landscape range extends from the mountain scenery around the highest mountains of the island such as the Punta La Marmora (6,017 ft.) and the Bruncu Spina (6,000 ft.) to the unique coastal regions like the well-known Costa Smeralda in the north-east and the Costa Verde in the south-west in the province of Cagliari. But Sardinia is interesting not only for its natural landscapes. On Sardinia, there are still many Nuraghi, prehistoric and protohistoric tower constructions, amongst them the towers of Barumini, a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. The experienced landscape photographer and island specialist Christian Bäck toured Sardinia several times for this illustrated volume, portraying the island at its most beautiful.
